With the support of the Latrobe Health Assembly, Ladder implemented an evidence-based parenting pilot program Surviving Adolescence to parents and carers of young people currently participating or who recently graduated from the Step Up Latrobe Valley program.

Our Surviving Adolescence Parenting Program is a complement to the Ladder Step Up Program. The program offers parents a safe space to share their experiences and concerns relating to their teen. Our Parent Development Coach offers relationship-focused approaches to parents and carers so that they can better connect and understand the development of their teen.   – Giselle Pinto, Acting CEO Ladder

The seven-week pilot program ran on a Tuesday evening and enabled parents and carers to learn about both adolescent development and the tools required to strengthen their relationships within the family structure.

Upon completing the program:

  • 100% of parents believe that their relationship with their child improved.
  • 100% of parents feel more confident in opportunities to connect with their child.
  • 100% of parents felt the Surviving Adolescence program provided them with the relevant tools to build their relationship with their family.

When parents were asked to describe the program using one word, words including helpful, informative, caring, involved, empowering, safe space and calm were mentioned.

Since completing the program, parents have confidently taken positive steps to adjust their parenting techniques and relationships with their child.

I’ve learned to step back to allow my son to be responsible for his decisions. I am attempting to give him more responsibility and seeing things from his point of view instead of just an adult point of view. – Parent program participant

I’m being more open to discussions and being more understanding and listening. – Parent program participant

We look forward to welcoming more parents and carers with the second Surviving Adolescence parenting program, commencing on Tuesday 23rd April. If you would like to refer into the program or make an enquiry, please complete the form here.
