Ladder and the AFL industry Ladder was established by AFL players in 2007 who recognised the power of sport, and the AFL industry, as being a powerful vehicle for social change. To this day, players continue to be at the heart of the organisation, supporting as staff, board members, advocates, volunteers and mentors. AFL players also provide significant financial support to the organisation, with every AFL player contributing $25 to Ladder per senior match. This equates to over $217,000 per year. The introduction of the AFLW league in 2017 saw a new wave of players embrace Ladder and actively work alongside AFL players to help young people in need. Ladder is proud to be the official charity of the AFL Players' Association (AFLPA) and has delivered significant social impact since Ladder's inception. Ladder is the only organisation that all 1,100 players collectively support. Ladder is also privileged to be a national charity partner of the AFL. The AFL provides finance and IT support to Ladder as well as contributing financially. Ladder is the official charity partner of the AFL Finals Series which is their biggest annual fundraising drive.
